Located in the Alt Pirineu Natural Park, near the French border, the road to the refuge is asphalted but pretty narrow (especially the last 3km). Its many twists, turns and narrows can pose a challenge to even the most experienced drivers. This route is not recommended if your passengers are prone to car sickness. Expect a road pretty steep. Starting from Tavascan, the ascent is 10.2 km long. Over this distance the elevation gain is 592 meters. The average gradient is 5.80%.
South the refuge, a ski-station service road climbs up to 2.198m (7,211ft) above the sea level, to the Tavascan station chairlift. The slope is very steep, consists of loose stones and becomes even steeper and rocky in the upper part. This trail can be done only a very narrow time-frame in the summer (end of August). The wind is usually quite strong at mountain areas. High winds blow here all year long.

extremeRoad trip guide: Conquering Refugi Prat d'Aguiló
🇪🇸 Spain
# Refugi de Prat Aguiló "Cèsar August Torras" Tucked away in the heart of Catalonia's Cerdanya region near the French border, this mountain hut sits pretty at 2,000m (6,561ft) within the stunning Parc Natural del Cadí-Moixeró. We're talking serious Pre-Pyrenean terrain here. The road? Yeah, it's definitely not your average drive. This is strictly 4x4 territory on an unpaved mountain track that demands respect. Starting from the village of Montellà, you're looking at a 15km adventure that'll take you right up to the hut on the northern slopes of Serra del Cadí, just below the Gosolans pass. The scenery along the way is absolutely incredible—classic high-altitude Pyrenean landscape that'll make your heart skip a beat. Here's the real talk though: conditions can be gnarly. Stick to late spring through early fall if you want the best shot at safe passage. Even then, you're dealing with mountain weather that doesn't play around. Heavy snowfall, avalanche risk, and landslides can pop up without warning, and the ice patches that form are seriously treacherous. These hazards can block sections of the road entirely, turning the drive into a genuinely dangerous proposition. The hut itself? It's been around since 1976 and serves as an absolutely stellar base camp for serious mountaineers. If you're the type who lives for alpine adventures, this is your spot. Just come prepared and respect the mountain.
moderateWhere is Jito de Escarandi-Alto de Sotres?
🇪🇸 Spain
Okay, picture this: you're cruising through northern Spain, deep in the Picos de Europa National Park, about to tackle the legendary Jito de Escarandi (or Alto de Sotres, if you're feeling fancy). This mountain pass sits way up high, and the views? Epic. Think dramatic peaks, rolling hills, and lush meadows—seriously, the landscapes here are out of this world! Known locally as the "Carretera de las 3 Villas," this paved route stretches for about miles from up in Cantabria. But hold up, it's not all smooth sailing. This road isn't for the faint of heart. Be prepared for some seriously steep sections, hitting grades of up to . And watch out for poor asphalt, loose gravel, and some pretty gnarly potholes – this climb will test your skills and your suspension! The average gradient is a thigh-burning but those ramps near the top crank it up to . Once you conquer that final push, the summit delivers a knockout panorama of the surrounding mountains. Fair warning: fog often rolls in, giving the place an almost mystical vibe. Trust me, the Jito de Escarandi is an adventure you won't soon forget.
hardWhere is Xorret de Cati?
🇪🇸 Spain
Okay, adventure seekers, let's talk about Alto de Xorret de Catí, a seriously cool mountain pass nestled in the Alicante province of Spain's Valencia region. You'll find this beauty hiding in the Sierras del Maigmó y del Fraile mountain range, specifically in the L'Alcoià area in the southeast. The road, known as CV-817, stretches for about 20.3 km (12.61 miles) between Castalla and Petrer. It's paved and generally in decent shape, though be prepared for a few bumpy patches along the way. You probably won't find much traffic, especially if you avoid the weekend. Now, don't let the pretty scenery fool you, this climb is no joke! We're talking seriously steep sections, hitting inclines of 20-22%. This climb is a tough one! In the past, the summit even had a monument dedicated to cyclists, but, believe it or not, someone stole it in May 2023 despite the monument being massive! You can tackle this pass year-round and remember, it's even been featured in the Vuelta a España, so you know it's legit. Get ready for some breathtaking views, and maybe keep an eye out for the stolen monument!
moderateA Paved Road to Pass of the Republic
🌍 Bulgaria
Okay, buckle up, road trippers! Let's talk about the Pass of the Republic in Bulgaria, also known as Hainboaz Pass. We're talking about a 700m (2,297ft) climb into the heart of the country, right on the border between Stara Zagora and Veliko Tarnovo provinces. Road 55 winds its way through the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina) for about 33.8 km (21 miles) from Voneshta Voda to Gurkovo. This beauty was built back in the swinging '60s. Expect a fully paved road that's seriously curvy! While the road's reasonably wide, watch out for sections where the central lines decide to take a vacation. At the top, you'll be rewarded with a couple of bars and a cozy mountain cabin to relax. Prepare for some stunning views!
